The Prix Max Jacob Etranger is one of the most prestigious poetry awards in the Francophone world since 1950 and is named after the avant-garde poet and painter Max Jacob. The members of the awarding committee are French critics, publishers, and poets. So far, the prize has been awarded to, among others, the German poet Volker Braun, the Arab poet Mohammed Bennis, the South African poet Breyten Breytenbach, the Estonian poet Jaan Kaplinski, the Tunisian-French poet Abdelwahab Meddeb, and others.
The poet Aleš Šteger and the translator of his work into French, Guillaume Métayer, have already received the French Alain Bosquet Prize for their translation of Šteger's poetry in November last year. The collection was published by the renowned French publishing house Gallimard in the legendary collection Du mond entier, which otherwise publishes poems by French and world classics. The book Au-delà du ciel sous la terre has had a considerable impact in France. Among other things, Šteger's extensive article was published in the newspaper La Nouvelle Revue Française, and recently the national Radio France Culture dedicated a one-hour broadcast to the aforementioned Šteger's book and Brina Svit's new book.
